A study in Pediatrics
found that 25.5% of children and adolescents in the US were eligible for
diabetes and prediabetes screening, with 85% of the diabetes cases among them
diagnosed. The findings also showed that compared with fasting plasma glucose,
hemoglobin A1C was a useful non-fasting screening tool for identifying youths
at risk for type 2 diabetes and heart disease risk later in life.
