Out-of-network providers charge more for COVID-19 tests


Commercial insurers pay an average of $130 for in-network COVID-19 tests, but out-of-network facilities charged over $185 for 25% of antibody tests and 40% of diagnostics, and some charged three times the average cost, according to an AHIP report. The findings suggest some facilities are engaging in price gouging, and AHIP called for enforcement of requirements that cash prices be made readily available online and the development of lower-cost testing options.
