Commercial insurers pay an average of $130 for in-network COVID-19
tests, but out-of-network facilities charged over $185 for 25% of antibody
tests and 40% of diagnostics, and some charged three times the average cost,
according to an AHIP report. The findings suggest some facilities are engaging
in price gouging, and AHIP called for enforcement of requirements that cash
prices be made readily available online and the development of lower-cost
testing options.
