The US logged 44,109 new COVID-19 infections and 1,222 fatalities
on Wednesday, bringing the total number of cases to more than 5.8 million and
deaths to over 180,000 since the pandemic started. Data from Johns Hopkins
University showed cases are declining in hard-hit states such as California,
Florida, Texas and Arizona, but cases are rising in the Midwest, where North
Dakota, Kansas, Iowa and Indiana are reporting spikes in their seven-day
