A study in Pediatrics found that the mean age of autism spectrum
disorder diagnosis in Black children was 5.4 years, which was, on average, more
than three years after parents first reported concerns about their child's
behavior or development. The findings, based on data involving 584 Black
children with ASD, also showed that 41.6% of parents reported going to multiple
health care providers before their child was diagnosed and 14% reported seeing
at least six doctors before getting an ASD diagnosis.
